Description
Distinctive and culturally rich piece of art that combines wood carving with intricate beadwork, capturing the essence of African traditions and craftsmanship.
In the past, Namji dolls were skillfully fashioned by craftsmen in northern Cameroon, specifically to act as symbols of fertility. These dolls were often carried by young girls to nurture their maternal instincts and by women seeking to enhance their chances of conception.
Typically, Namji dolls comprised a wooden figure adorned with intricate beadwork. Today, our contemporary interpretations of Namji dolls are meticulously handcrafted by artisans hailing from Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These talented individuals are currently residing as refugees in Nairobi, Kenya. Their deep appreciation for the traditional fertility doll has garnered them a devoted following within shops throughout East Africa.
