History of Mudcloth

The term “mudcloth” is translated from Bambara, the language spoken in Mali. “Bògòlanfini” as it is called in Bambara, combines three root words: “bogo” meaning earth or mud, “lan” meaning ‘with’, and “fini” meaning cloth

Traditionally, men wove strips of fabric together to create a larger canvas and women dyed it using an intricate process. The vibrant and beautiful designs are created by painting with fermented mud or sludge. The cloth is first dyed using tea leaves and branches, then dried in the sun

It’s not perfect. The handmade nature of Mud cloth means there will be slight variations and potentially small perfect imperfections. That is what makes it a unique fabric.

How to care for African mud cloth

Mud cloth can be washed in cold water without much colour loss. However, dry cleaning is preferable to protect the dyes. It is highly recommended to wash it by hand.

Care

Handle silk satin and silk twill gently by hand-washing in cold water with mild detergent, avoiding wringing or twisting. Always air-dry flat away from direct sunlight and iron on low heat with a cloth between the iron and the fabric.
